In the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, a Round Table and strategic meeting took place, dedicated to important issues of prevention, early diagnosis, and control of arterial hypertension and diabetes. Within the framework of the event, the results of a comprehensive study were presented, which assessed the treatment, adherence to prescriptions, and patient awareness regarding the treatment of arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes in primary healthcare institutions across the country. This data aims to improve the quality of medical services and raise public awareness about the necessity of monitoring these diseases.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Health, the National Center for Cardiology and Therapy named after M. Mirrahimov, and the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I. K. Akhunbaev, with the support of a Swiss project aimed at effective management and prevention of non-communicable diseases in Kyrgyzstan.
The study involved 1,996 patients with arterial hypertension and 1,101 patients with type 2 diabetes; their outpatient records were also analyzed.
The results of the study revealed serious issues with adherence to treatment regimens: only 43% of patients with type 2 diabetes and 38% with arterial hypertension regularly take their prescribed medications. Additionally, many of them miss doctor appointments, irregularly undergo tests, and make changes to their treatment without consulting a physician.
Among patients with type 2 diabetes, 76% are aware of their blood sugar levels, but only 23% know their glycated hemoglobin levels—a key indicator of treatment effectiveness. From this group, more than half (79%) have elevated glycated hemoglobin levels, indicating insufficient disease control. At the same time, 77% of patients with arterial hypertension regularly measure their blood pressure, but 44% of them continue to have high readings. More than 90% are unaware of their cholesterol levels—an important indicator of cardiovascular disease risk.
At the round table, emphasis was placed on presenting the program for the prevention and control of arterial hypertension in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2026-2030, developed by the National Center for Cardiology and Therapy named after Academician M. Mirrahimov. The main goal of this program is to create an accessible and effective system for the early detection and control of arterial hypertension.
The participants of the Round Table supported the initiative "Check Your Health," which unites all stakeholders and aims to address pressing issues by mobilizing various resources and comprehensive approaches.
