The unique knowledge of preparing the traditional Kyrgyz drink Maksym has been added to the UNESCO Representative List, confirming its status as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
This decision was made unanimously on December 10 at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, taking place in New Delhi from December 8 to 13.
The preparation of the application took four years, and it was submitted to UNESCO in 2023 after a successful evaluation by independent experts. Final approval was received at the committee meeting.
At the current session, 68 proposals are being considered for inclusion in the lists of intangible cultural heritage, including such items as the "National Dish Koshari" from Egypt, the "Diwali Festival" from India, and "Traditional Japanese Handmade Paper".
Additionally, Uzbekistan joined the nomination "Traditional Knowledge and Skills in Yurt Making," presented by Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 2014, with the yurt of Karakalpakstan.
Currently, there are 812 elements from 153 countries listed in UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, including 16 items from Kyrgyzstan, such as the epic trilogy "Manas, Semetey, Seitek," the art of felt carpet making, and the traditional horseback game kok boru.
