At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Agricultural Policy on March 16, the issue of reducing the area of green spaces per capita in Bishkek was discussed.
Deputy Azizbek Tursunbaev expressed dissatisfaction that Bishkek, once considered one of the greenest cities, is now facing changes in this regard.
He noted that the city regularly conducts severe pruning of trees, which negatively affects their appearance and functionality.
“You prune trees every four to five meters. I have never seen anything like this anywhere in the world. What is the effect of this?” the deputy questioned.
In response, Bishkek's Deputy Mayor Ramiz Aliyev stated that previously there were about 16 square meters of green space per resident, but this figure has now dropped to approximately 4 square meters.
Aliyev explained that the city practices sanitary pruning of trees, particularly concerning poplars, which lose their upper parts as they dry out.
“There are two types of pruning: severe and light. When a poplar starts to dry out, its upper part begins to deteriorate. In such cases, pruning is carried out,” he clarified.
In conclusion, the deputy added that for old trees, it is best to remove them and replace them with new ones.
