A temporary ban on the export of scrap and waste of ferrous metals from Kyrgyzstan may be extended. The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has initiated discussions on the relevant draft document.

If the draft is approved, the ban on the export of scrap, waste of ferrous metals, and charge ingots will be extended for six months. The ban affects goods that fall under code 7204 of the EEU Customs Tariff.

Currently, there are five major processing enterprises operating in the republic, capable of processing about 490,000 tons of ferrous metals per year. Previously, the government imposed export customs duties on ferrous and non-ferrous metals to support the metallurgical sector; however, their effectiveness in reducing export volumes has proven insufficient, as stated in the justification note.

The initiative's developers noted that extending the ban will help meet the growing demand for quality secondary scrap metal in the domestic market of the country.
