In Mongolia, a high-precision analysis of pedestrian traffic at major retail and service points has been conducted for the first time. The study was carried out using the international geolocation analytics platform Geo PRO by Mobicom Corporation, which counted pedestrians with the help of a professional research group, GMR. Geo PRO was developed in Japan and was initially used for urban planning, road congestion analysis, and public service accessibility assessment. Currently, this technology is actively applied in several Asian countries for real-time analysis of pedestrian flow and service accessibility.
According to the study, the three most popular shopping centers in Ulaanbaatar, where shoppers most frequently visit, are Shangri-La Mall, Улсын их дэлгүүр (State Department Store), and E-Mart. These locations, with years of experience, are situated near the city center and have a stable customer flow. In fourth place is Go.to Market, which has been operating for just one and a half years.
The results show that the top three shopping centers with the highest visitor traffic are the oldest ones, located in the city center and having a loyal customer base:
In first place are Улсын их дэлгүүр (State Department Store), E-Mart, and Shangri-La Mall. Interestingly, Go.to Market, which opened just a year and a half ago, secured the fourth position, surpassing older competitors with experience ranging from 5 to 50 years.
🚀 Why is the Go.to market growing so rapidly?
The Go.to market is located in a densely populated area of the Sukhbaatar district and operates under the concept of "Lifestyle and Community Center." Currently, it serves 14,000 households, and it is expected that by 2028, this number will increase to 25,000. This demographic advantage has already impacted attendance: in 1.5 years, the average daily visitor count reached 8,400, and it is projected to grow to 13,000.
If the Go.to market continues in the same vein and expands its services, it could become one of the three busiest shopping centers in Mongolia next year.
Do you agree with this analysis? Where do you prefer to shop?
This study is the first in Mongolia based on real data that reflects pedestrian flow in real time, providing an accurate picture:
● Real consumer behavior,
● The impact of placement strategies,
● The success of new concepts,
● Growth potential.
The value of this research lies in the fact that it has allowed for the first time in Mongolia to map large-scale pedestrian flow based on real data. The results show that despite the continued popularity of old shopping centers with a good reputation, new conceptual retail points are also demonstrating significant growth over a short period.
Comparing the attendance of various shopping centers included in the study will serve as an important signal for service providers, allowing them to better understand real demand, enhance their competitiveness, and stand out among competitors.
