The fourth train accident in a week in Spain: a train collided with a crane

As a result of the collision that occurred near the port city of Cartagena in Murcia, four people sustained minor injuries, according to local emergency services.

A representative of the regional emergency services stated, “the train did not derail and remained on the tracks.” Following the incident, train services between Cartagena and Los Nietos were temporarily halted.

This accident marked the fourth in Spain in the past week. The most serious one occurred on January 19: a high-speed train derailed in the province of Córdoba and collided with another train, resulting in the deaths of 42 people, including the driver of the oncoming train.

The next day, January 20, a suburban train also derailed near Barcelona after a retaining wall collapsed due to heavy rains. In this incident, the driver was killed, and 37 people were injured, five of whom are in critical condition. There were three trainees in the train cabin who also sustained serious injuries and are in intensive care.

On the same day, another incident occurred: a regional train derailed due to a stone that fell onto the tracks; fortunately, no one was injured in this case.

The day before, Spain's largest train drivers' union, SEMAF, announced plans to hold a nationwide strike in response to the series of railway accidents. The union demands criminal accountability for those responsible for the safety of railway infrastructure.
