According to the report "Global Urbanization Prospects 2025" prepared by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in the mid-20th century, only 20% of the world's population lived in cities. Today, this figure has reached 45% of the total number of inhabitants on Earth, which is 8.2 billion.
The report emphasizes that cities serve as a driving force for economic growth, create new jobs, and provide access to education, healthcare, and essential infrastructure. The concentration of resources in cities fosters innovation and increases labor productivity.
UN experts predict sustainable growth of urban agglomerations in Central Asia.
Kyrgyzstan. It is expected that by 2050, the share of the population living in large cities will increase from 35.5% to 43.4%. Currently, 23.1% of the country's citizens are rural residents, while 35.5% live in small settlements, and another 35.5% are in large cities.
Kazakhstan. It is projected that by 2050, the share of residents in large cities will increase from 45.3% in 2025 to 51%. Currently, 22.4% of Kazakhstan's population lives in villages, while 32.2% reside in small towns and urban-type settlements.
Tajikistan. More than half of the country's population, specifically 51%, lives in urbanized settlements that are not large cities. Rural residents make up 15.5%. By 2050, the share of the population in large cities is expected to grow from 33.3% to 46.8%, and nearly 90% of citizens will live in urbanized areas.
Turkmenistan. By 2050, the share of the urban population will increase from 32.5% to 37.8%. Currently, 21.7% of the country's citizens live in rural areas, while 45.8% reside in small towns and settlements.
Uzbekistan. It is expected that by 2050, the share of the urban population will rise from 43.8% to 54.6%. Currently, 43.3% of the population lives in small towns, while 12.8% live in rural areas. It is projected that by 2050, the share of rural residents will decrease to less than 9%.
