The General Director of KazTAG, Aset Mataev, announced this via Facebook, stating that Kasenov's lawyers informed him of the detention.
According to the police, the investigative actions were carried out in accordance with criminal procedural legislation. Based on the collected materials and the current stage of the investigation, on December 23, the editor-in-chief was detained and placed in the temporary detention facility of the Astana Police Department.
The police emphasized that all actions are being conducted in strict accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.
The publication "Vlast" reports that lawyer Rena Kerimova believes that Kasenov's detention is an excessive measure considering part 3 of article 274 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to "Dissemination of knowingly false information."
Kerimova expressed the opinion that the detention may be a response from law enforcement to statements regarding psychological pressure and the use of illegal investigative methods. She hopes that the investigating court will provide an adequate legal assessment of the situation and deny the request for arrest authorization.
Previously, both the General Director of KazTAG and editor-in-chief Amir Kasenov were recognized as suspects in connection with statements from Freedom Finance regarding publications about possible fraudulent schemes by its management. It is reported that the KazTAG editorial office learned about the initiation of the case on November 20 through the media, although the case itself was opened back in the summer. For several months, the police conducted investigations and examinations without notifying the editorial office.
