Thousands of people, both Danes and Greenlanders, took to the streets of Copenhagen and Nuuk to express their opposition to Donald Trump's intentions to purchase Greenland.
The protesters displayed banners with slogans such as "Hands off Greenland" and waved the island's flags.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen participated in the demonstration.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted on Instagram: "Today many chose to spend Saturday at demonstrations in support of Greenland. The Greenlandic and Danish flags side by side are beautiful."
It is worth reminding that a bill concerning the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" has already been introduced in the U.S. Congress.
The explanatory note to this document states that it allows the U.S. President to take "all necessary steps" to acquire Greenland.
Donald Trump previously claimed that the U.S. would "get control of the island one way or another." During his first presidential term, he spoke about the possibility of purchasing Greenland, and in March 2025, he mentioned the possibility of annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs if they refused.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of the island, which further solidified allied commitments within NATO. According to this agreement, the U.S. committed to defending Greenland against potential aggression.
