On December 9, 2025, in the Intermediate People’s Court of Tianjin, the death sentence against Bai Tianhui, who previously held the position of CEO of the investment company China Huarong International Holdings, was carried out. This event became known through information from RIA Novosti.

The sentence was approved by the Supreme People’s Court of China.

Case Circumstances

Bai Tianhui was found guilty of receiving bribes on a particularly large scale. During the investigation, it was revealed that he abused his official position by assisting third parties in obtaining projects and corporate financing. As a result, his actions led to him receiving illegal income amounting to 1.108 billion yuan (approximately $156 million).
The death sentence was handed down in May 2024. The court also prohibited Bai Tianhui from engaging in political activities and confiscated all his property.
The February court session rejected the convicted person's appeal, even despite his cooperation with the investigation and the provision of significant evidence that helped uncover other crimes.

Fight Against Corruption

The execution of Bai Tianhui's death sentence became another significant event in the anti-corruption campaign led by Chinese President Xi Jinping. This campaign, aimed at combating corruption among lower-level officials ("flies") as well as high-profile corrupt individuals ("tigers"), has been intensified since 2012.

In 2022, Xi Jinping characterized corruption as "the main malignant tumor" threatening the party's viability and expressed his commitment to the principle of "zero tolerance" towards this phenomenon.
