In Bishkek, the city court reviewed the appeal against the sentence previously issued by the Pervomaisky District Court. The court upheld the decision in the case of Joomart Karabaev, a former employee of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan. This was reported by human rights activist Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova.

It should be noted that on May 27, the Pervomaisky District Court found Karabaev guilty and sentenced him to three years of probation.

Joomart Karabaev was detained on July 3 of last year by the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), and he was charged with inciting mass riots and disobeying authorities.

According to his lawyers, the basis for the prosecution was Karabaev's refusal to prepare distorted judicial examinations, as well as his criticism of colleagues who do so.

The court decided to arrest Karabaev, and he spent four months in a pre-trial detention center, after which he was released on a signed pledge not to leave.

Previously, Karabaev also testified in the case of publicist Olzhobai Shakir, who received a five-year prison sentence in May 2024 for preparing for mass riots.
