A Million for Freedom or Jail: Pregnant Rhythmic Gymnastics Coach Placed in Pretrial Detention

It is reported that the statement from the parents of the injured girl was made after discussing financial matters.

A post has appeared on social media from Kyrgyzstani Aydai Aydarbekova, who defends rhythmic gymnastics coach Nazmi Askarova. She claims to have insight into the real situation and believes it is necessary for the public to hear an alternative version of events.

On February 20, coach Nazmi Askarova was detained in Bishkek, against whom a criminal case has been initiated under the article "Causing serious harm to health" in the Internal Affairs Department of the October District. This occurred as a result of an incident that happened on December 24, 2025, when a minor girl was injured during warm-up at training.

According to Aydai Aydarbekova, initially, the father of the injured girl did not make any claims against the coach, agreeing that there are risks in sports. Nazmi remained in contact with the family and assisted in the rehabilitation process for two months. However, later the family demanded compensation of $11,000 (approximately 1 million soms), threatening to go to law enforcement and the media. After Nazmi's arrest, her relatives collected the requested amount, but the injured party refused to accept it, stating that they would "think about it more."

"The question arises: if the amount was $11,000, why didn't they take it? Now that Nazmi is in pretrial detention, it seems that the stakes have increased," Aydarbekova notes.

She also mentioned that Nazmi has significant experience in sports.

"Nazmi is a candidate for master of sports and has been practicing rhythmic gymnastics since the age of four. She has been working as a coach for over five years and is currently in her fifth year at KGAFCiS. In 2024, she participated in an international conference in Lisbon. Rhythmic gymnastics is a complex and injury-prone sport. Everyone who sends their children to sports understands the risks. It is also worth noting that the girl has had fractures in the past, which the family prefers not to discuss," Aydarbekova added.

According to information, Nazmi is pregnant, but she has been assigned a two-month term in pretrial detention.
