In a recent episode of the "Kabar Podcast," the Minister of Health of Kyrgyzstan, Erkin Checheybaev, expressed his opinion on the need to increase taxes on products that are harmful to health. He emphasized that excise taxes should be raised not only on alcohol and tobacco but also on carbonated drinks, energy drinks, and other goods that can negatively affect the health of the population.

According to the minister, the funds obtained from the tax increases should be directed to the country's budget. This money is planned to be used for disease prevention, conducting informational campaigns, as well as creating social videos about the dangers of substances such as salt and sugar.

Checheybaev also pointed out the influence of commercial companies that may hinder the implementation of such initiatives.

He recalled that six years ago, when he held the position of Deputy Minister of Health, he participated in the development of a bill regulating tobacco smoking. At that time, various non-governmental organizations, including those focused on health issues and diabetes prevention, opposed this law. Despite lobbying efforts, the law was passed.

The minister noted that in developed countries, there are strict restrictions on the sale of alcohol, such as a ban on its sale after 10 PM.

Erkin Checheybaev expressed confidence that Kyrgyz society is ready for change and will support initiatives aimed at limiting the availability of harmful products.
