Booted Eagle

Status: VI category, Near Threatened, NT: R. Monotypic species [47]. A rare and poorly studied bird. One of two representatives of the genus in the fauna of Kyrgyzstan.

General distribution and in the country. Found in southern Europe, Africa, Central and South Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. In Kyrgyzstan, it inhabits the mountainous forests of the republic.

Habitat. Occupies forests of various types: deciduous, and less often coniferous.

Population. In Kyrgyzstan, its population has not been studied. Overall, its numbers are not large. In the last three years, two individuals were recorded in 2001 and 2002 [62].

Life style (life cycles). A migratory bird. It appears in the territory of the republic in April. Nests are mainly built in deciduous trees, less often in conifers. The clutch consists of 1-2 eggs. It primarily feeds on birds, and less often on small rodents and reptiles.

Limiting factors. Direct destruction, nest disturbance.

Breeding (keeping in captivity). No information available.

Existing conservation measures. Protected in several reserves and national parks. No special protective measures have been taken, but hunting of the Booted Eagle is prohibited throughout the republic.

Recommended conservation measures. Organize protection in the territories of reserves. Create protected areas at nesting sites. Conduct detailed studies of the species' biology to identify limiting factors.

Hieraaetus pennatus (J.F. Gmelin, 1788)

Status: VI category, Near Threatened, NT: R. Monotypic species. Rare bird, poorly studied. Inhabits mountainous deciduous and, less frequently, coniferous forests. Population numbers are not available. In the last three years, only 2 birds were recorded in 2001 and 2002. A breeding bird, it arrives in April and lays 1-2 eggs. It primarily feeds on birds, and less often on rodents and lizards. Nest destruction and illegal hunting are major limiting factors. There is no data on breeding in captivity. No special measures to protect the species have been undertaken, but hunting of the Booted Eagle is prohibited. It is recommended to establish protected areas around nesting sites.
