Hieraaetus pennatus (J.F. Gmelin, 1788)

Status: VI category, Near Threatened, NT: R. Monotypic species. Rare bird, poorly studied. Inhabits mountainous deciduous and, less frequently, coniferous forests. Population numbers are not available. In the last three years, only 2 birds were recorded in 2001 and 2002. A breeding bird, it arrives in April and lays 1-2 eggs. It primarily feeds on birds, and less often on rodents and lizards. Nest destruction and illegal hunting are major limiting factors. There is no data on breeding in captivity.
