The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, Adylbek Kasymaliev, held a meeting to discuss the project of the General Plan for the development of the capital, Bishkek, until 2050. This information was announced by the press service of the cabinet.
In his opening remarks, Kasymaliev emphasized that the General Plan is a crucial strategic document for the long-term socio-economic and territorial development of the city. He noted that the high public interest in this project underscores the need for open and thorough discussion, as well as the consideration of all proposals and assessment of potential risks.
“The quality and balance of the General Plan directly affect the sustainable development of the city, the comfort and safety of its residents, as well as the investment attractiveness of Bishkek. At the same time, it is necessary to preserve green spaces and historical-cultural heritage while ensuring environmental safety,” added the head of the cabinet.
During the discussion, it was mentioned that as a result of the administrative-territorial reform that took place in 2024, the area of the city increased by 25,707.3 hectares, now totaling 41,032.67 hectares. The population grew by 132,380 people, reaching about 1.3 million, and the actual figures may be even higher due to active urbanization.
It was noted that Bishkek faces a number of serious problems, such as the overload of the transport network, lack of green and recreational areas, as well as the deterioration of engineering infrastructure and instances of chaotic construction, which negatively impacts the quality of life of the city's residents.
The mayor of the capital, Aibek Junushaliev, reported that the project of the General Plan was presented for public discussion in October 2025. During this time, more than 300 comments and suggestions were received, which will be carefully considered in the process of finalizing the document.
Specialists from the Research Institute of Prospective Urban Development from St. Petersburg, who developed the project, presented an analysis of the current state of the city, demographic trends, and key directions for its development until 2050, including issues of transport, social, and engineering infrastructure.
In conclusion of the meeting, the necessity of continuing work on the General Plan project was emphasized, taking into account proposals from the public and experts, as well as ensuring its phased and balanced implementation.
