What does deepfake fraud entail?
Criminals use technology to create fake:
- videos featuring well-known personalities, business leaders, friends, or family members;
- audio recordings where a mimicked voice demands money transfers or important information;
- phone calls impersonating superiors who "urgently" need assistance.
“You might receive a video from your 'boss' asking you to immediately transfer funds to the 'partners' account. In reality, this is a fake created using artificial intelligence,” explained the Main Internal Affairs Directorate.
How to avoid falling into the trap?
1. Always verify information. Call the person directly before fulfilling their request, especially if it involves money.
2. Don’t rush. Fraudsters often use urgency tactics to make you act thoughtlessly.
3. Be cautious if the behavior of a "familiar" person seems strange — pay attention to unusual speech patterns, accents, or persistent requests.
4. Do not disclose personal data and passwords even to "trusted" individuals without prior verification.
5. Use multi-factor authentication on all important accounts.
6. Educate your loved ones, especially the elderly and youth, about potential risks.
“Remember: if something seems suspicious, it probably is. If you have the slightest doubt, seek help from specialists or your organization's security service,” the police added.
