At a recent meeting of the expert group, the issue of creating an agreement on medical insurance for labor migrants in the CIS countries was discussed. According to the press service of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States, this initiative concerns not only migrants but also their families.

During the meeting, experts evaluated the proposals and comments received from various member states and, by majority vote, approved the draft agreement, which will now be submitted for consideration by the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS.

The issue of medical care for labor migrants and their families in host countries is relevant both for CIS states and for the world as a whole. Often, these workers, especially those who are not highly qualified, face inadequate social protection and limited access to medical services.

According to international agreements in effect since 1997, emergency and urgent medical care for Commonwealth citizens in the territory of other CIS countries is provided free of charge, while planned medical care is offered on a paid basis.

Considering the risks faced by labor migrants—such as language barriers, financial difficulties, and limited access to healthcare services—a draft agreement has been developed within the Commonwealth aimed at improving access to medical care for this category of citizens.

This document establishes the basic principles and directions for cooperation among member states regarding voluntary medical insurance for labor migrants and their families during their employment in the CIS countries.
