Opinion: The Kara-Keche TPP will cover electricity imports

“A reserve will be available that can be utilized at any time”

According to Ernest Karibekov, an energy expert, the construction of the Kara-Keche TPP using coal could completely eliminate the need for electricity imports for Kyrgyzstan. He expressed his opinion in an interview with Vesti.kg regarding the government’s initiative to create solar power plants in 1000 villages.

“First of all, the issue of cost should be considered. The smaller the capacity of the power plant, the longer the payback period will be, which, in turn, will lead to a higher price for electricity. Additionally, there are certain limitations concerning solar power plants. In this context, small hydropower plants appear to be more promising, and they are being actively constructed throughout the country,” he added.

Karibekov also reminded about the possibility of implementing a large project for the construction of a thermal power plant at the coal deposit in Kara-Keche.

“The TPP could fully meet the current electricity needs of Kyrgyzstan, producing 6-7 billion kWh. While currently, we import 3-4 billion kWh. Thus, there will be a reserve that can be used at any time of the day and year,” he noted.

Furthermore, at a meeting with the residents of Kemin, Deputy Prime Minister and head of the GKNB Kamchybek Tashiev spoke about plans to build solar power plants with a capacity of 1 MW in 1000 villages.

He also reported the presence of investors ready to financially support this project.
